A difficult year for stag rut in our Fontainebleau forest. Hunting is far too present and especially court hunting, a cruel and traumatic hunt that is still practiced (even though it is prohibited in most countries).
The result is that fewer and fewer animals frequent the forest
The forest loses its soul and its king gradually disappears.
Man is definitely the most dangerous predator on the planet.

An eagle can live up to 70 years, but to reach this age the eagle must make some hard and difficult decisions.
The most difficult part about this location is finding the right composition - there are so many lines and so many possibilities. The second challenge is getting the right light with that composition.
These clouds came from the south and then turned toward the east as the winds shifted. More clouds were in the west, but there was a break, and it was a waiting game for the light to illuminate the mountain.
Just the right amount of water over the salt to provide reflections yet not be impacted by the winds.
The Great Salt Lake - GPS is not the exact spot of the shot.

Female Hooded Oriole
After three years of putting up Oriole feeder, I finally have a few females that will perch out in the open where I can photograph them without a feeder in the frame.
The stealthy males continue to hide in the Palm or Giant Bird of Paradise trees; swooping down to a feeder before I can get a shot.
(Orioles love feeding from “hummingbird feeders” that have enlarged holes to facilitate the Orioles larger beak).
A bit of background information for those interested in Orioles:
Black and brilliant yellow-orange flash across the sky when male Hooded Orioles dash through open woodlands and yards of the southwestern U.S. Following close behind are the pale-yellow females.
Sometimes called "palm-leaf orioles," these orioles "sew" their hanging nests onto the undersides of palm fronds. They often stay hidden while foraging, but their large, slender shape and nearly constant chatter usually give them away. Hooded Orioles also use hummingbird feeders, awkwardly bending or hanging upside down to drink.
Hooded Oriole song is a chattering mix of notes and cries that sometimes includes a few notes from their neighbors. In Arizona, they mimic Gila Woodpeckers and Ash-throated Flycatchers.
Hooded Orioles in California earned the nickname “palm-leaf oriole” because of their tendency to build nests in palm trees. When the nest is suspended from palm leaves, the female pokes holes in the leaf from below and pushes the fibers through, effectively sewing the nest to the leaf.
A few Hooded Orioles in southern California and Arizona hang around neighborhoods all winter long, taking advantage of free food at hummingbird feeders instead of migrating south.
Orioles are members of the blackbird family (Icteridae), along with meadowlarks and cowbirds. Birds in this family all have super strong, long, and pointed bills. They use these bills to get at food other birds can’t reach, such as prying apart thick patches of grass, opening up flowers, enlarging holes in tree bark, and digging into ripe fruits for their juice.
Hooded Orioles expanded their range northward after people planted more ornamental palm trees around their homes and suburban areas. By 2017, Hooded Orioles were using parks and suburban yards as far north as Arcata, California.
The oldest recorded Hooded Oriole was a male, and at least 6 years old when he was found in California in 1972, the same state where he had been banded in 1967.

It is often difficult to comprehend and appreciate the size and scale of a glacier until you’ve seen it from the air. Mendenhall Glacier here for example is 13.6 miles long, 3.8 miles wide, around 2000 feet at its deepest, and rises from beneath sea level to over 6200 feet in elevation.
Having seen glaciers from a distance on foot in Iceland, it was a completely different experience to see one via helicopter. We flew over the glacier for several minutes before landing on a flat area for some hiking. A few things that amazed me while flying overhead though was how deep the crevasses were, how insanely blue the ponds of melted glacier water were, and how far the ice field stretched up into the mountains. But most of all, the sheer size of the glacier was just incredible.
The other remarkable thing was the visible path of dirt and sediment that revealed the flow of the glacier as it bent around the curves of the mountains on its way to the sea. The path must have represented decades of movement.
If you ever get a chance to visit Juneau, Alaska the Mendenhall Glacier is definitely worth a visit!

I always find difficult to differentiate the butterflies of the Nymphalidae family, I think they have the size but the designs of their wings have for sure tiny differences.
This "señorita" is a West Coast Lady.
This year as was pretty happy to see more butterflies in the backyard without looking for them. They flew all over the place at different hours, and even enjoy the tall grass behind the house.
I'm also glad that collecting butterflies as a hobby has been replaced by photography, since some of them are in danger of extinction. Give yourselves a pat on the back you photographers!!

Getting more and more difficult to find something to smile about in this era of lockdown and no visitors. This little fellow’s visits, however, bring a sense of joy as he flitters around looking for a tasty morsel.
Bewick’s Wrens are medium-sized wrens with a slender body and a strikingly long tail often held upright. They have slender, long bills that are slightly downcurved.
Bewick’s Wrens cock their long tails up over their backs, often flicking their tails from side to side or fanning them as they skulk through tangles of branches and leaves searching for insects. During breeding season, males sing vigorously from prominent perches.
Bewick’s Wrens favor dry brushy areas, chaparral, scrub, thickets in open country, and open woodlands near rivers and streams. They are at home in gardens, residential areas, and parks in cities and suburbs.

Hello my amazing Flickr friends !
Today is an orange day at Color my World Daily and the theme at Crazy Tuesday is « single ». So you will understand that Mr. Teddy Bear couldn’t be with us this week since he isn’t single anymore… However, Mr. Teddy Bear has a very good friend who happens to be single: Mr. Dino. That is why he is the hero of today’s picture. Mr. Dino is truly a nice guy but some of his personal characteristics make it very difficult, for him, to find love. First of all, Mr. Dino has a very, very high voice. People constantly call him « madame » while on the phone. He has very short arms which makes difficult to pick stuff from the floor… Also, being blue isn’t appropriate for all the decors… And you surely don’t want to repaint your house at the very beginning of a relationship. Also, he has a very scary looking shadow, which might scare a few potential candidats. All those details are the reasons for Mr. Dino being single. But who knows, maybe after today’s picture he will find love…

AN UNOBTRUSIVE LITTLE WOODLAND BIRD, it is easily overlooked as it creeps up tree trunks, probing for insects and spiders. This bird, for me is very difficult to capture, this is the best of a great undisclosed number of shots, and its not that good!

Always difficult for me to tell the difference between Neotroic and Double-crested Cormorants. There are Double-crested in the Riverstone Wetlands, but the orange coloring around the eyes (the lore) is more pronounced this time of year. I’ll go with Neotropic. Sugar Land, Texas.

Pareidolia gone nuts? I was lucky that I still had the package of walnut halves that I'd bought for the "In Ice" theme (please see the first comment). So I thought I'd continue that story: a "brain", finally freed from the restrictions of its former ice skull housing – what would it do? I think it would begin to curiously discover its new world, discover its own intellect (without the interfering thoughts of its previous owner) – much like a child that grows up and gets more and more independent, and has an enormous hunger for knowledge, but also for mischief and fun :) My first idea was to make a pair of glasses for the brain / walnut; I thought I'd use jewellery wire for it, but then I looked at the small walnut halves and the thin wire, and thought: impossible! Unachievable! Too difficult for my clumsy hands! Well, I might have given it a (most likely unsuccessful) try, but went looking for nuts in the toolbox instead, nuts small enough to serve as eyes. So may I introduce you to Frankie, the brain that set out to conquer the macro world – but should adjust its eyes first :)

Die Muttern aller Kopfnüsse
So erschien mir dieses Thema zunächst – es erwies sich dann aber als erstaunlich leicht und schnell umsetzbar. Zum Glück hatte ich noch Walnüsse vom Thema "In Ice" übrig, und so dachte ich auch gleich daran, die Geschichte des "Gehirns" im Eisschädel (siehe ersten Kommentar) weiterzuspinnen. Was würde so ein Gehirn, plötzlich ganz auf sich allein gestellt, weil vom Eise, damit aber auch von den störenden Gedanken seines ehemaligen Besitzers befreit, wohl tun? Ich könnte mir vorstellen, dass es wie ein Kind seine neue Welt erkundet, wissbegierig und neugierig, dabei auch stets zum einen oder anderen Unfug bereit. Um also der Walnuss alias Hirn ein Gesicht zu geben, dachte ich daran, ihm / ihr eine Brille aus Schmuckdraht zu basteln. Je mehr ich aber überlegte, wie ich das wohl elegant anstellen könnte (z.B. unter Zuhilfenahme von Buntsstiften für die runde Gläserform), ohne mir dabei die Finger und gleich auch noch den Draht unrettbar zu verbiegen, desto lauter wurde der (gedankliche) Ruf nach einer einfacheren Lösung. Also habe ich den Werkzeugkasten nach möglichst kleinen Muttern als "Augen" durchstöbert – und wurde zum Glück fündig :) Darf ich also vorstellen: Frankie, das Hirn :)

It was a bit difficult to drag myself up in the early morning, especially during the trip. But I did not want to miss any morning lights in a totally strange place. Here is another photo at the same morning as posted last one. The colors of sky and clouds changed rapidly in the early morning. The wind is omnipresent in the Magdalen Islands. Strong sea breezes have always been a part of the lives of their inhabitants.
A BIT OF HISTORY:
In 1534, Jacques Cartier was the first European to set foot on the islands, although the Mi'kmaqs had been going there for hundreds of years to hunt walrus. The archipelago was named in 1663 by François Doublet, then owner of the territory, in homage to his wife, Madeleine Fontaine. In 1765, the islands were inhabited by about twenty French-speaking Acadians and their families. Many of the Magdalen Islanders still fly the Acadian flag today.
The Magdalen Islands (also known as Les Îles de la Madeleine) are a relatively unknown destination in Canada but may well be one of the most breathtaking and surreal landscapes you can visit in the country. The small Quebec archipelago in the Gulf of the Saint Lawrence is so awe-inspiring that National Geographic just added the locale to its 25 Best Trips to Take in 2020.

Un champ d’Épilobes en épi (en anglais Fireweed) situé sur la Pointe-aux-Outardes dans Manicouagan, sur la Côte-Nord, Québec, Canada.
Une vue à partir de la rue Labrie près de l’entrée du Parc Nature de Pointe-aux-Outardes situé au 4 Rue Labrie.
L’Épilobe en épi (Epilobium angustifolium) aussi appelé l’Épilobe à feuilles étroites, Laurier de Saint-Antoine ou encore Osier fleuri, est réparti sur tout l'hémisphère nord : Asie, Afrique, Amérique du Nord et Europe.
Elle a tendance à coloniser rapidement les zones ouvertes et humides où il y a peu de concurrence, tels que les sites incendiés ou les clairières des forêts. Elle pousse aussi longtemps que l'espace est ouvert et qu'elle dispose de beaucoup de lumière, puis quand les arbres et les broussailles grandissent, les épilobes meurent, mais les graines restent viables dans le sol pendant de nombreuses années.
En 1793, elle permet au botaniste allemand Christian Konrad Sprengel d'imaginer la théorie de la pollinisation des plantes par les insectes (entomogamie). Les rhizomes bouillis ont pu constituer dans les campagnes un aliment de substitution pour faire face aux difficultés et aux menaces de disettes : réduits en poudre, ils servaient à faire des galettes remplaçant le pain. Les jeunes pousses issues de turions sont comestibles : blanchies comme les asperges, cet usage vaut à la plante le nom d'asperge des bois ou d'aspergette. Elles ont un goût légèrement sucré et ont été consommées comme légumes en Europe, en Asie et en Amérique du Nord. Elles sont laxatives si elles sont mangées en grosse quantité en raison de la présence de tanins.
Les Amérindiens employaient son suc pour soulager les irritations de la peau et les brûlures, pratique qui a également cours en Europe. En médecine populaire européenne et nord-américaine, on l'utilisait sous forme de tisane pour soulager les troubles gastriques et respiratoires et la constipation. L'épilobe est mellifère et entre dans la composition des miels multifloraux de montagne. Si les massifs de cette fleur sont très importants, il est possible de récolter un miel d'épilobe limpide aux teintes cendrées (devenant blanc de neige en cristallisant), doux, d'une grande richesse aromatique et d'une texture particulièrement fine. Ce miel monofloral, rare, est très recherché.

It can be difficult to get close to a Northern Shrike. I just really liked this perch and the fading western light on this guy even at a distance.

Momotus aequatorialis (Andean motmot / Barranquero)
The Andean Motmot, as the English name implies, is the Andean representative of the "Blue-crowned Motmot" complex. For many years, all members of this group were considered to be conspecific, but this group now is reclassified as representing five different species. The Andean Motmot occurs in humid montane forests of the Andes mountains of South America, from Colombia south to Bolivia. Andean motmot is a big bird about 50 cm from beak to tail.
These birds often sit still, and in their dense forest habitat can be difficult to see, despite their size. They eat small prey such as insects and lizards, and will also regularly take fruit.

Landscape on the Isle of Skye, Scotland.
It was difficult to get a 'special' shot of this amazing place on such a dull overcast day so I decided to scale a hillock and include some people in the shot for scale.
The Fairy Glen is so named for the simple reason that the area looks a little unearthly. It has nothing to do with fairies, or so they say... It's like a Quirang landslip but in miniature. The heavily worn path on left of frame climbs a little to a basalt topping of the tallest of the outcrops just here. A great vantage point I am sure but, sadly, my ankle wouldn't take the gradient. The spiral of stones is a tourist creation that the locals keep clearing away to try to keep the area as natural as possible.
I imagine in beautiful light the place looks extra magical but, under these clouds, I didn't feel like taking too many shots. I just wanted to sit upon the damp grass and soak in the peace and atmosphere of the Fairy Glen.

It's difficult to go outside with such cold and strong winds, but it is worth to see this.
The biological cooling effect of a wind at 80 km/h (50 mph) at minus 12° C (- 10° Farenheit) as here, is the same as minus 20-25° ( -4° to -13°F) in quiet air, since the natural thermic gradient around the body is blown away.

A pretty difficult shot - framed into the light. The dynamic range of the machine coupled with post processing came to the rescue. Captured along the west coast of the Island.

Поездка сюда была спонтанной. Кто-то предложил встретить рассвет на Истре и мы все поддержали, тем более погода обещала быть морозной. Зимой Истра практически не замерзает из-за большого обилия родников подпитывающих реку. Температура родников около +8С, поэтому то река и подогревается зимой. В сильные морозы река начинает парить, окутывая все вокруг пушистым инеем.
Это было довольно прохладное утро, всего -26 по Цельсию. Стоял очень плотный туман над рекой, пришлось ждать, когда поднимется солнце, чтобы хоть что-нибудь было видно. Я переживал за фототехнику, штатив покрылся инеем и работать с ним было очень тяжело. Что ж, это был довольно интересный опыт.
The trip here was spontaneous. Someone offered to meet the dawn on Istra and we supported everything, especially since the weather promised to be frosty. In winter, Istra practically does not freeze due to the large abundance of springs that feed the river. The temperature of the springs is about + 8C, so the river is heated in winter. In severe frosts, the river begins to soar, enveloping everything around with fluffy hoarfrost.
It was quite a cool morning, only -26 Celsius. There was a very dense fog over the river, we had to wait for the sun to rise in order to see at least anything. I was worried about photographic equipment, the tripod was covered with frost and it was very difficult to work with it. Well, it was quite an interesting experience.
Dainty Damselfly (left), Mediterranean Bluet - Apart from male upper appendages...difficult! Reference sources point to S1/S2 design, pterostigmas, etc all of which are difficult without capture. Assuming habitat preference is diagnostic, this must be a good pointer.... unless that doesn't hold true throughout the overlapping range, including most of Spain...!
